"my best friend"

JMF Boogie Beam

May 17, 1986- June 20, 2005

It is amazing how a horse can shape your life and change things for you.  Boogie came into my life when I bought his dam in foal to Whispering High Beam.  I was sure I didn't want a colt only a filly but when I saw him I fell in love and knew he had to stay with me.  I had never raised a foal before and I know I made all kinds of mistakes with him but with his gentle spirit and easy going ways he tolerated me and I'm sure was amused by my bumbling attempts to teach him things.  He was always gentle with me and with everyone around him.  I never had any fear of him and just went ahead and did what every I wanted with him.  Our first ground driving was with his dam and I had no idea what I was doing.  I had never driven a horse single much less double but a double harness was all I could find at the auction at the time so a team it was.  I enjoyed driving so we started giving hay rides and sleigh rides for who ever wanted to come out.  We had such fun doing this.

Boogie was that once in a lifetime horse for me, I did everything with him that I had ever dreamed of doing when I was a kid.  I dressed him up and we rode in parades, I made funny costumes and we went to town on Halloween.  He pulled the wagon, the sleigh and all kinds of things behind him with no complaints.  We chased some cattle, we rode the trails, we learned together at clinics and just had fun riding around the country.  If there was something I ever wanted to do with a horse I did it with Boogie.  On top of it all he produced over 80 lovely foals both purebred and part bred and I know they are giving their owners the same joy I had with him.

Tuesday night June 21st was  one of those  beautiful nights with a gorgeous red sunset. The air was warm and smelled sweet. I was out in the pasture with a mare that had just foaled .  I stood guard over the new foal until her mom could get up and I was looking out over the pastures filled with mares and foals and young stock.  I could see Kruiser with his
mares and foals in the lush grass with the sun shinning down on them and it looked like a tiny bit of heaven.  I realized that Boogie gave me this and I felt he was telling me that life goes on and he will always be with me
through his descendants.  It was my childhood dream to own a black stallion and live on a farm and raise beautiful horses and because of him I have lived my dream. Thank you my friend it has been amazing sharing my life with you.

Boogie's mom was my first morgan and held a special place in my heart.  She taught me many things and was a sweet mare with anyone.   I didn't take that many photos of her but she will always be in my heart.

CHARNEL VELVET

1991- 1999

Sept. 8th

Well this is really hard for me to do but we lost our sweet Velvet today.  I went out to feed this am and found her laying down and rolling.  I called the vet and while I was waiting I walked her around.  He came and told us that she needed to go to the U of S so we frantically tried to find a truck to pull our trailer, as ours heats up when we try to pull anything.

Well we couldn't find one so we had to make do with our truck.  It took us an extra 45 minutes to get there as we had to go very slow.  About 30 miles from the vet clinic she crashed.  I phoned and asked what I should do and they said just to keep coming.

When we got there they gave her pain meds and this calmed her while they assessed her.  this was the longest hour while we waited but I could tell they were not hopeful.

She had a twisted bowel and they believed the only thing to do was put her down, she was not expected to survive surgery.  So I said Goodbye to my beautiful Velvet and let her go. She was a special friend and I had so much fun with her over the years.  I always used to giggle at her when she would lag back while pulling the wagon or sleigh and let Boogie do all the work.  She was my kids horse and was a good mom to her 3 foals,  Sable Dancin Beam, Sable CottenCandy and Sable Sweet Dream. A Picture of her that I am going to enlarge and hang on my wall is one where she is nursing her foal while my daughter is sitting on her back.  She has this very patient expression on her face.

I'm going to miss you Velvet.
